Hong Kong: Inakaya – Sashimi of the View

6477In Chinese calligraphy, the simpler the characters are, the more difficult it is to write them well. So we learnt from our childhood, that the simplest things are the hardest to do (well) in life. But Japanese went much further in the art of creating things in the simplest form, from its world renowned minimalism to its magical cuisine.

Inakaya – Japanese chain, particularly famous for its robatayaki, sits high above Hong Kong on the 101st floor of the International Commerce Centre – the tallest building in town. That’s how far you have to go to stand out in such a gourmet heaven like Hong Kong. And this effort is indeed hard to ignore, so I went for lunch on the last day of my Hong Kong trip – for the view.

It’s a chilly Monday, a bit grey; we arrived at 13:00 to avoid the lunch rush hour. Lunch menu was extensive; I decided to make it simple and took the Sashimi Set (Appetizer, Sashimi, Steamed Egg Custard, Rice, Miso Soup, Pickles, Dessert).

The view was indeed sensational and breath-taking, although the day was not clear and the city covered by clouds and rain. The sashimi was fresh and juicy, sea urchin particularly nice – in combination with the view, it was, in fact, better than the fancy sea urchin from Amber I had the other night – simple and pure – amazing how the minimum efforts can make heaven out of nice things…

To be honest, the food was good there but perhaps nothing too remarkable; but I didn’t go merely for the food; and if you too want to get high high-up, go there to enjoy the view 400 meters above Hong Kong while chewing on some sweet, sweet sea urchin…

Price: Lunch set HKD 500 per person.
