Hong Kong: Seafood Excursion

1940There are a few islands around Hong Kong, mostly famous for seafood restaurants. The most popular ones are the Cheung Chau Island and the Lamma Island.

It was a Saturday evening, in order to avoid the weekend crowds, I went to the least touristic Lantau Island – about 30 minutes with ferry from the Central Pier.

The ferry journeys in Hong Kong are always nice – you got to see the beautiful Victoria Harbour and the city’s exciting skylines from a distance. And it’s the best way to reach the Lantau Island; many people (particularly expats) prefer to live there and commute to work by ferries every day, for its relaxing tropical island flare and the sense of oasis outside the busy scenes of Hong Kong.1956

Upon arrival, we went to a local supermarket by the pier to pick up some wine – the ‘Welcome’ market, where an impressively large selection of wines are presented; I even found ‘Grand Cru Pfersigberg Riesling’ from Alsace (HK$ 150), which turned out to be very nice and pleasant.

The restaurants are 5 minutes’ walk from the pier, all very simple in style; seeing them being all pretty similar, we just took the first one.

The seafood selection here is usually not so much as in the other two islands (where you have all kinds of fish, crabs, prawns, lobsters, mussels and clams in fish tanks to choose from), but you got to save the touristic parts instead. We had boiled prawns, fried crabs with garlic and chilli (fantastic!), steamed fish of the day (heaven!), squid in XO source, clams and mussels, all fresh and tasty, typical for an island excursion.1952

Anyway, an Island excursion for seafood is a must in Hong Kong, truly…
