I got lucky, since my husband blaacisly did the restaurant training. The guy can’t cook, and I teach Monday evenings. So once Emma was born, he started taking her to restaurants for Monday dinner. He did a great job putting up with fussing when necessary, and teaching her good restaurant manners. I don’t have a problem with some restaurants putting in age restrictions, or other restrictions, such as not allowing children to run between other tables and annoy other customers it is their business, after all. However, I also feel that if we don’t include children in adult activities from the beginning, how are they ever going to learn? And there is the issue of personality I’ve been blessed with a really well-behaved child, but there are children who are just harder to discipline and teach. As adults I think we need to be willing to put up with that a bit, to allow other people’s children to learn. What really irks me is when I see parents in public who are ignoring their children. Whether that’s talking on a cell phone while out with their child, or talking to another adult while the child fusses, it drives me crazy. If I see a child fussing in a restaurant who’s being held by a parent (but still fussing) I’m much more understanding. However, if a child is fussing in a car seat and the parent is too self-involved to try to comfort the child, I want to take the child away from them. Parents need to tailor their behavior to do the best job of creating civilized people, not assume they can continue their childless habits and ignore the needs of their children.
