Congee King, a little Wonder

Let me present you the little jam I newly discovered in HK – a small congee place hidden in a mal(Olympian City II) l on the Kowloon side – the ‘Congee King’, or otherwise called ‘Tasty Congee & Noodle Wantun Shop’, or ‘the Trusty Congee King’.

Since 2011, it’s been recommended by the Michelin Guide every year. But, always been suspicious about the little red book, plus no big fun of congee, I didn’t expect much from the Congee King.

Until there’s this new location opened in the shopping mall in my adjacent neighborhood, which is about 10 minutes away to reach on foot from where I stay.

So one Wednesday afternoon I found myself passing by this famous little place, and unlike what I heard – there’s no one single sign of the ‘eternal long queues’ outside the shop – it was rather empty inside; well, thanks to the time ( Wed 3pm.) and it’s newness.

I went in and was immediately shown to a table.

After studying the long menu, I decided for the signature ‘Congee with Pig’s Liver and Eel Ball’, ‘Platter of Four Signature Appetizers’, ‘Boiled Scallops’ and ‘Wafu Trotters’.

The waiting was almost unbearably long, but the food was truly amazing! The Congee, giving the fact they do not use MSG here, was so….ooo tasty, the liver was very gentle and flavorsome, showing their solid and unbeatable food quality. The Appetizers were among the best I’ve had in Hong Kong too, came almost as a shock; the Scallops juicy and sweet, went perfect with the soy sauce, leak and ginger based sauce. And the Trotters, mellow and soft with the nice touch of Japan (Wafu), excellent….

In fact, the meal was SO good; it was the kind of excitment that’s almost inspiring or stimulating… Leaving me no other choices but to go again the next day!

So, I was there again! And tried the signature Shrimp Wantun Soup, Boiled Oyster, again the Appetizer Platter, and Oyster Omelet.

The Shrimp Wanton was very seriously made – unlike the usual ones you get in most of other places. The Oyster Omelet was full of juicy oysters, and was a bit in-between a pizza and a pie. I took half of it home as I ordered too much like always, and it still tasted good the next morning, even though it was cold.

So, in summary, it’s a very nice congee restaurant where food and business is treated seriously and with respect. It’s delicious, healthy, convenient, and ridiculously cheap! And there are so much to offer other than dozens of different congees and noodles.

There are two locations (only, the rest are just fake copies), the other one is older and more famous, the address is: 7 Heard Street, Wan Chai.
